How to Write an Academic Essay

How to Write an Academic EssayAcademic essays are designed to be the final piece of the college application puzzle. By writing an essay, you will be helping your chances of being awarded admission and earning your degree. There are many great things about writing a powerful academic essay. First of all, it is not only a test of your writing ability but of your argument as well. If you don't believe that, try writing an argumentative essay on a topic in which you have little or no expertise. Or perhaps you aren't sure how to start a discussion; all you have to do is read on.The first thing you need to do before you begin to write the essay is to come up with an introduction. Start by briefly introducing yourself. A really good introduction is one that gives readers an idea of who you are and what you have to offer. A poor introduction can lead the reader right into a response that is unoriginal or one that does not add anything to the overall essay. Be sure to include your name, name o f school, name of the professor or instructor, and your contact information.Focus on what your essay is about and get down to writing. Analyze the essay subject from a variety of different perspectives. However, when you focus on one particular topic, make sure to give enough information to allow your readers to understand the subject and the reasoning behind your conclusions. Use short sentences and one-word paragraphs to keep the article simple yet interesting.Use metaphors and questions to bring several different topics together. For example, instead of writing a sentence like 'Napoleon's French troops recaptured Alsace-Lorraine', use a two-word phrase like 'French and allied troops recapture'. Or 'French and allied troops recapture Alsace'. Once you have your topic, start thinking about how to make the essay more compelling and visually appealing.Take some time to brainstorm about the goals of the essay. What would the end result look like? A great way to do this is to envision the whole essay as a painting.Incorporate contrasting statements, themes, and examples throughout the essay. Take time to actually think about what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. You can do this with a pencil and paper or on your computer.Once you have had a chance to reflect, now is the final step in writing an academic essay. You have taken the time to learn about the basics and now it is time to put them into practice!
